One of the best horror movies since years!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT! I was almost gasping for breath towards the end of this bloody film. Inside is not only one of the best horror movies to come out for a long time but it is also one of the goriest and most gut wrenching movie watching experience.
Directred by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, Inside tells the horrid one-night experience of a pregnant woman named Sarah (Alysson Paradis). After going through a terrible car accident, Sarah loses her husband but she survives with her unborn child. The movie then transposes to 4 months later where it i time for her to deliver the baby. She is depressed, pissed off and leads a lonely existence. She is a photographer by profession and still continues to work on an assignment involving the ongoing riots in France. Her mother is there to support her but Sarah refuses to have her mother in her house. She has to be taken to the hospital the next day and her boss/editor will help her out. On that night, she is stalked and attacked by an unknown lady. What happens during that night and why is she attacked by this strange woman is what forms the rest of the film.
This is a simple premise, not much different from most thriller/slasher films, but the directors make it one hell of an experience. The movie is a no holds barred, blood filled barrage of high tension scenes. The movie does nothing to hold back on its violence. Add to the fact that you have a pregnant lady here and you have those hordes of "no wait! You're not going to do that!" moments. The movie uses everything from scissors and stitching needles to toasters and guns for the struggle between the two ladies. There is enough gore in this movie to satisfy any horror fans.
But the beauty of the movie is also how coolly the directors juxtapose the violent scenes with the silent eerie moments. They don't employ any of the trite attempts to scare the audience by sudden appearances of the killer or by loud jarring background music. There are scenes where the stalker is right there behind Sarah and all the camera does is observe her. No music, no action just pure terrifying fear. Fucking cool! The editing is absolutely commendable. There are scenes where it makes those sharp, quick MTV-style cuts without being annoying but adding beautifully to the jarred atmosphere. Some nice work on the music too. It doesn't have a haunting theme but makes use of some cool techno sounds in the background.
Béatrice Dalle as the killer lady is brilliant. I would never want her anywhere near me, ever. Alysson Paradis as Sarah is sweet.
Watching Inside is like watching one of those live torture chambers. It takes a lot to sit through it and there were times when I was just screaming my lungs out, muffled only by the pillows I had stuffed in my mouth. There comes a point in the film where you probably feel "gosh this is too much" and think the film has gone way overboard in its violence. But watching such a daring and blood wrenching movie is rare. Also, for the way the movie ends, it is probably justified. This is a near masterpiece.
